Lumene – which was named after the Central Finnish Lake Lumene – was founded in 1970 by the pharmaceutical company Orion. Obsessed with the lightness of the natural glow associated with Nordic women, Orion wondered if there was any way to bottle this up so that women worldwide could have a little piece of it for themselves.Starting with its native Finland, the brand – meaning ‘light’ in Latin – quickly dominated the market and became the country’s brand leader by 1973.
